More On Today’s Job

January 12th, 2010

So, I’m trying to play the part of a real journalist today. I’ll be writing an article in less than 10 hours–– an anomaly for a writer like myself. Phone interviews and crazed research jaunts await. Oh, and two or three more french presses, too.

Watch the video below to get a better feel for what I’ll be composing today.

Enjoy your Tuesdays. See you soon.

‘Extraordinary Moments’ Temporarily Postponed

January 11th, 2010

I know all of you (all three of you) have been electrified with anticipation for my extravagant moment of March 2009. Thus, you should know that the series has been postponed.

In the mean time, I’ll be working on an article about this:

May your eyes revisit soon…

Nine Extraordinary Moments of 2009: February’s Moment

January 8th, 2010

3. February; Orlando, Florida

February’s moment is short. But sweet.

This feels mildly awkward for me, as I’m highlighting a moment of career breakthrough. Nevertheless, the moment was extraordinary for me.

On February 10, Relevant Magazine’s online publication ran a memoir of mine about my time in the impoverished country of Zimbabwe. The piece was titled “Happy Are the Poor.”

Getting published in Relevant opened up more doors than I ever would have [could have] anticipated. This was a massive breakthrough for my writing career, especially since I had decided just a month before to pursue freelance writing.

I’ll try to plug out March’s humorous moment soon.

As Promised, a New Year’s Post

January 1st, 2010

This is a bit unnerving–– my first blog post on the newly renovated julestompkins.com. Most blogs come and go as quickly as a junior high girlfriend. The typical scenario, from start to finish, transpires like this:

Jamal logs in to Facebook. Jamal clicks the link in Roger’s status. Jamal reads Roger’s Blogspot post. [The post is far too ambitious, sharing the deepest thought Roger has ever conceived, poorly communicated]. Intrigued, Jamal creates a Blogger profile. Jamal designs an orange and green blog, featuring Tahoma font and a clever title like “Until the Dawn” or “Longing Soul.” Jamal maintains his blog for a two months, totaling twelve posts–– four of which came in the first week.

By the time of he was composing his twelfth post, Jamal was admitting his guilt concerning his lack of blog maintenance.

Such a scenario is what I’ll be trying to avoid on this site.

Instead, here is what you can expect from my blog:

-An average of two posts every week

-Frequent mentions of Jesus, my fiance Bethany, my friends, my family, and IHOP

-Attempts at humor

-Grounded, honest writing

-Sarcasm

-Innovative, experimental writing style

Hopefully this will be an enjoyable experience for you and I both.

PS: Thank you Stephen Jordan for creating this site. You’re a great friend.
